3rd year 6’5″ 237 lbs. left wing tower Justin Vaive(23) earned his first call-up from Hartford Wolf Pack to hopefully help the team turn the corner on a woeful season.

Not exactly a prolific goal scorer, he got his first on the 2013/2014 campaign recently, which has him at or surpassing modest career highs in all point categories with a current +6 rating on a team that’s near the Eastern Conference cellar.

He’s off to a fast start in the ECHL this year with Greenville Road Warriors posting a new goals scored mark at 10 and tied for overall points, done in one-third as many games from his rookie season with Cincinnati Cyclones.

In 4 years of college hockey at Miami University he was never really much of a point production guy but was fairly accountable on ice with a healthy +16 plus/minus and won a NCAA (CCHA) Championship in 2010 before turning pro.

He signed his first deal, an AHL contract with San Antonio Rampage and inked an extension for another year despite the absence of any points.

The still young 24-year old was originally an Anaheim Ducks‘ 4th round pick in the 2007 draft (#94 overall).

His father Rick Vaive played 876 NHL games at almost a point-per-game pace.

Original story: 2/27-14

After finishing the 2013/2014 establishing new AHL career highs for assists (4) and points (5) he was sent back to Greenville Road Warriors to help them with their postseason push.

In 13 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoff games he lit up the score sheet with 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points before bowing out in the Eastern Conference Finals.

To start 2014/2015 he was given a contract to continue with Hartford Wolf Pack.

The huge power forward found his scoring touch as he connected for a best 14 goals, 18 assists and 32 points in 62 games and added another helper in 8 playoff contests.

The now 26-year old has been rewarded for his career campaign by scoring an NHL contract, a 1-year, two-way deal with New York Islanders.

He’ll almost assuredly will start with their affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers but could get a recall if he can keep up the scoring pace and use that huge frame to make a difference out there.

Evan McCarthyGoaltender Evan McCarthy(29) is back in between the pipes for a second season with Walpole Express of the Eastern Hockey League juniors, but for 2015/2016 he’s committed to Miami University (Ohio), where he’ll also grab himself a nice education.

The fairly big 6’3″ 180 lbs. net minder has yet to post outstanding numbers through a pair of years in US junior hockey (he played for a pair of NAHL teams as a rookie) but that all looks to change since he decided on his future intentions.

He’s already off to a quick start posting a 4-0-2 record with a 2.50 GAA and .938 SV% (all bests) and will likely blow right past his minutes played before the midpoint of the season.

He’ll be 21-years old when he starts his college career but that’s fairly typical in a goalie’s development.

Tyler Biggs

Toronto Maple Leafs‘ 1st round pick in the 2011 draft (#22 overall) right wing Tyler Biggs(22) must have been antsy to turn pro as he lasted only one season after his selection at Miami University before signing his 3-year entry level deal.

He started his ascent in US National development hockey programs, where he won back-to-back gold medals and was named team captain in his second year.

The 6’3″ 224 lbs. forward went on to skate one campaign in the OHL with Oshawa Generals, but was already under contract on a slide, so the wheels were in place for him to make the jump.

He joined minor league affiliate Toronto Marlies at the end of 2012/2013 and notched his first goal.

Reassigned out of training camp to start his rookie season in the AHL, he hasn’t exactly exploded on the score sheet with only 7 goals and 2 assists in 57 games.

The big, rugged winger seems to be experiencing some growing pains adjusting his game to the next level and has even found himself up in the stands watching for most of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

It’s a bit of a wonder if the parent club will continue to work with their prospect or if he’ll be packaged in an off-season trade to get some proven talent to help them make the 2014/2015 NHL playoffs.

3rd year undrafted center Carter Camper(11) was recently involved in a minor league deal that sent him from Boston Bruins‘ prospect system to Columbus Blue Jackets.

He’s skated most of his games in the AHL with affiliate Providence Bruins and has displayed a slight down tick in point production but could start to ignite in his new environment.

The very small, generously listed at 5’9″ 173 lbs. forward played in 3 NHL contests in his rookie season scoring one goal but somehow seemed to slip on the depth chart.

He was initially signed to a 2-year entry level deal and qualified for another.

His contract expires at the end of 2013/2014.

The 25-year old will become an unrestricted free agent and free to sign anywhere.

He was injured at the time of the trade and just started playing again with Blue Jackets‘ farm squad Springfield Falcons.

A real bright spot in last season’s Calder Cup Playoff run, he struck for 8 goals and 5 assists in 12 games with a +6 rating before bowing out late in the second round.

He’s always been a more than a point-per-game guy through American junior hockey and four years at Miami University, where he was captain in his final season at the school.

Depending upon how he produces for his new team, he could be signed to stick around pretty quickly or might decide to see if the overseas ice is any better for his game.

chris-wideman-1

Ottawa Senators‘ 4th round pick in the 2009 draft (#100 overall), defenseman Chris Wideman(6) started his pro career in the ECHL with affiliate Elmira Jackals.

It only took him less than a few weeks and games (posting 4 assists) to earn his first recall to Binghamton Senators in the AHL.

Other than one reassignment for an overnight and a game, in which he got his fifth helper, he was back up with the B-Sens for the remainder of his rookie season and playoffs.

In 60 games, the 5’10” 185 lbs. blue liner (those numbers seem a tad inflated) scored a pair of goals and 16 assists with a +8 rating. He added a goal and 2 assists in three Calder Cup Playoff contests, tying him for the lead in postseason scoring, while he was second on the team for assists in the regular season.

The 23-year old signed a two-year entry level deal that makes him a restricted free agent at the end of the upcoming season.

He may seem small out there but he plays responsibly and showed the potential to have an offensive upside in his first campaign and throughout four years at Miami University.

Despite the abundance of good defensive specialists in the system, it would be no surprise to see him score an NHL recall.
